From angle grinders to laser cleaning

A continuous-improvement business case: substitute the rotating disc where utilization can carry the capex. Historical grinder harm is well documented; laser Class 4 + LGAC must be actively managed. HSE gain is conditional on real extraction — and on OEM-controlled humidity.

Numbers 1–5 follow the hierarchy of controls. Text is in the legend — not burned into the image.
  1. Elimination — remove the task if possible
  2. Substitution — 1064 nm laser instead of the disc
  3. Engineering — laser zone, LGAC extraction, filtration
  4. Administrative — LSO, training, no contact lenses in the zone
  5. PPE — OD 1064 nm eyewear; contact lenses are not protection

OEM atmosphere — humidity is not optional

Laser cleaning requires controlled work conditions: at least moderate humidity, plus the temperature, cleanliness and extraction envelope stated by the equipment OEM. Dry air increases tear-film stress under 1064 nm IR and can worsen plume behaviour. Do not invent a percentage — read and apply the OEM environment specification before any zone is opened.
